Agnigarh -A Historical Site


The Legend :
       The northern bank of Brahmaputra is full of history,legends and mysteries .Here lies a beautiful city of Tezpur (old name is Sonitpur) which is known as 'City of eternal romance'.The history of Tezpur is very old.Earlier it was known by different names,such as Sonitpur ,Parapur,Banpur,Harupaswer,Usha nagar etc. As the suggests ,agnigarh was surrounded by fire at all times ,  in order to prevent anyone from entering or exiting the fortress without permission . All these protection measures were done to prevent the Usha and Aniruddha .The story goes that princess Usha was  renowned for her beauty and charm and had a very talented painter;Chitralekha, for a friend 
       once ,while sleeping ,the princess saw a very handsome man in her dreams and fell in love with him.Using her rare artistic skills,Chitralekha not only painted the picture , but also recognized him as prince Aniruddha,(grandson of Lord Krishna).
       According to the Bhagabat and Bishnu purana , king Bana the son of Bali,belonging to the famaly of Prahlad , had established  a capiotal . In the Kalika Purana it is mentioned that Banraja was ruling over Sonatpur and Naraka was ruling Pragjyutish.According to legends Banraja had a beautiful daughter named Usha .
      Aniruddha was the grandson of Lord Krishna who wanted to marry Usha as he had heard about the eternal beauty and charm of her . Chitralekha had a magical power of drawing only by hearing description of a particular thing or a person. When Usha had explained about handsome prince she dreamt of , she happily agreed to print a portrait of the deam prince . According , Chitralekha painted the portrait of Aniruddha , and Usha had pleaded to bring Aniruddha at once for her.She flew one night and brought Aniruddha to Usha's palace while he was sleeping , using her powers.When Aniruddha  opened his eyes and  saw Usha he fell in love immediately. Both married secretly to each other inside Agnigarh .However , Banasura was furious on knowing this ,and tried him with snakes and imprisoned him.

Bana         B ana  also known as Banasura ,in Hindu mythology, was a thousand armed asura king and was the son of Bali. Banasura in believed to have ruled the present day central Assam with his capital at Sonitpur. According to the legend, Banasura was a kirata king . He used to worship Rasaliongam, which was given by Vishwakarma on instruction from Vishnu . An ardent devotee of Shiva , used his thousand arms to play the Mridonga when Shiva was performing the tandaba dance,Shiva gave Banasura a boon and Banasura requested Shiva to be his protector. Banasura become invincible. As time passed , Banasura become cruel and arrogant . he locked up his daughter ,Usha in a fortress called Agnigarh because many young suitor came to him asking for her hand.
